Why charity fundraising feels as
good as winning money
We all feel good when we do something for charity, but why? Is there a psychological explanation?
In short, yes, “research shows that we are happiest when we’re doing for other people,” as reported by Metro interviewing Laurie Santos, a Professor of Psychology at Yale University.
“When we help another person – whether it’s holding a partner’s hand as they go through something painful or donating money to a charity, we see “reward-related” activation in the brain. Regions of our brain, like the ventral striatum, that process basic rewards – such as eating tasty food or winning money – also activate when we are doing something nice for someone else.” Social psychologist Naomi Eisenberger

Charity fundraising at work boosts brands and hearts
It doesn’t end there, though, as research has also shown that charity work is great for the brand, team, and profits.
“77% of consumers are more likely to use companies committed to making the world a better place.” Harvard Business School
According to Impact reporting, when a company leads with purpose, respondents were:
- 76% more likely to trust that company
- 72% more likely to be loyal to that company
- 70% more likely to defend that company
- 72% more likely to forgive that company in the case of a misstep
Plus:
- 66% of respondents consider a company’s purpose when making purchase decisions.
- 71% of respondents would purchase from a purpose-driven company over the alternative when cost and quality are equal.
Not fundraising for charity or sharing views?
Perhaps the worst of this research is that 49% assume that companies who don’t speak on social issues don’t care.
Of course, most people and businesses donate and give back privately in their personal lives, but it’s interesting to see how a business can be perceived for not sharing its corporate and social responsibility goals and achievements.
The figures for charity work go on and can be read in the Impact Report and go from an increased market share of 4 to 6% to consumers being 4 times more likely to purchase.

Charity fundraising in the workplace drives recruitment acquisition and retention
Apart from the feel-good factor, a company’s approach to corporate social responsibility can positively impact recruitment and retention with respondents of research 78% more likely to want to work for that company.
Add to that the following, and it’s easy to see the benefits for everyone, let alone the people the charity with helps:
- 93% of employees believe companies must lead with purpose.
- 70% of employees wouldn’t work for a company that lacked purpose.
